OK I think I see now. It wasn't clear to me initially from reading through the description, but I can see the blinking led indicating that the motor has commutations, and that the DC must be pulsed at various phases of the motor cycle? this means that at certain phases the force is attractive and that at other phases it is repulsive?

Yes. There is attraction and repulsion at some positions. It remains to show where the attraction occurs with a static coil.
